Kuching school attack update - MCMC removes livestream video

MCMC Removes Livestream Video

On October 21, 2026, acting Sarawak Police Commissioner Mohamad Saifullizan Ishak confirmed to Sinar Harian that the 16-year-old male student had livestreamed the alleged attack on a female teacher at an international school in Kuching. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has since removed the video that was posted on Facebook.

Saifullizan stated that the viral video circulating on social media was indeed related to the incident. The Kuching District Police Headquarters received an emergency call about the incident at 8:03 a.m. "A 16-year-old male student allegedly carried firecrackers and used a sharp weapon to injure a teacher. The victim is a female teacher who reportedly suffered cuts to her hand," he said.

Police to Hold Press Conference

Police have stated that they are conducting an in-depth investigation into the case from multiple angles. A press conference will be held on October 27 (next Tuesday) to announce the latest developments in the investigation.

As of October 22, police have recorded statements from 24 individuals, including the complainant, victim, medical personnel, arresting officers, the suspect's parents, family driver, school management, and students. The suspect is currently still receiving hospital treatment. Police will continue the investigation based on his health condition and in accordance with medical advice and assessment.

Injured Teacher Discharged

Tunku Putra-HELP School issued a statement confirming that the injured female teacher has been discharged from hospital. The school praised the teacher for her courage and calmness during the incident, and thanked other students who quickly took action to assist.

The school also revealed that psychological counseling has been provided to some students to help them cope with the impact of the incident. The school management and board of directors will continue to review campus safety measures with the authorities.

Government Response

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has stated that the MCMC is investigating why Facebook failed to detect or block the livestream of the attack. He emphasized that platform operators should take swift action to address violent content.

Police emphasized that the investigation is being conducted in a professional, thorough, and comprehensive manner, taking into account all relevant evidence. The case is being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons) and Section 6(1) of the Explosives Act 1957.
