Sin Chew Daily Business Excellence Awards sharing session

Sin Chew Daily, a stalwart of the Malaysian Chinese-language press, is now just three years shy of its centenary. Established 97 years ago, the newspaper has not only endured but is actively reinventing itself for the digital age. At a recent Business Excellence Awards sharing session in Kerian, Seberang Perai Selatan, and Kulim, Ooi Khang Guan, Executive Director of Media Chinese International Ltd and Chief Executive Officer of Sin Chew Media Group, outlined how the organization is evolving from a traditional print media outlet into a comprehensive digital ecosystem.

Credibility as the Foundation of Transformation

In his speech, Ooi emphasized that Sin Chew Dailys deep credibility remains its core competitive advantage. Readers trust the publication, and advertisers value the sense of responsibility the paper brings to every story it publishes. In an era of information overload and rampant misinformation, this credibility is the most irreplaceable asset of traditional media, Ooi stated.

He revealed that the group has been aggressively expanding into new media and business ventures. These include launching online television platforms, e-commerce initiatives, co-working spaces, corporate investment ventures, and establishing a Digital Media Innovation Center. The center offers businesses one-stop digital content services encompassing content planning, brand promotion, filming, and event management. This evolution means Sin Chew Daily is no longer merely a news provider but is transforming into an integrated media services platform.

AI Training as a New Engine

Notably, Sin Chew Daily has conducted nine artificial intelligence training courses since last year, with the programs certified by the Human Resource Development Corporation (HRD Corp). This demonstrates that the group is not simply chasing technological trends but is committed to providing systematic AI and digital skills training for businesses and professionals.

The initiative aims to build an ecosystem where media, enterprises, and the workforce can exchange knowledge and grow together. By equipping local businesses with AI literacy, Sin Chew Daily is positioning itself as a catalyst for digital transformation across the Malaysian economy.

Local Roots, National Reach

Ooi also highlighted Sin Chew Dailys pioneering role as one of the earliest Chinese newspapers in Malaysia to introduce color printing for its local editions. Through these regional editions, local chambers of commerce, Chinese associations, religious organizations, community events, schools, and livelihood issues receive detailed coverage. This hyper-local approach ensures residents have accurate access to community information.

This community-focused strategy complements the groups recent digital expansion: print media anchors the local communities while digital platforms amplify the reach. The dual approach allows Sin Chew Daily to maintain its grassroots connection while expanding its influence nationally and beyond.

Business Excellence Awards: 14 Categories

At the sharing session, Sin Chew Senior Manager (Projects) Gan Min Tak detailed the Sin Chew Business Excellence Awards framework. The awards feature 14 categories: Lifetime Achievement Award, Business Personality of the Year, Sustainable Business Excellence Award, Export Excellence Award, International Business Excellence Award, Retail Excellence Award, Product Excellence Award, Service Excellence Award, Manufacturing Excellence Award, Digital and Technology Enterprise Excellence Award, Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Excellence Award, Property Excellence Award, Rising Enterprise Award, and Sin Chew Integrated Health Excellence Award.

Gan explained that the awards are designed to allow local businesses to learn from the success stories and business models of award winners, continuously improving their own operations. The initiative also aims to inspire outstanding enterprises to expand into global markets and elevate local brands on the international stage.

Strong Local Turnout

The sharing session, held at the Ah Chiang Seafood Restaurant in Bagan Samak New Village, drew numerous local leaders and business representatives. Attendees included Kim Hui Group Managing Director Datuk Yeong Chye Seng, Fah Hing Palm Oil Industries Chief Operating Officer Datuk Ma Rui Ze, Eppor-Pack Sdn. Bhd. Managing Director Lee Chee Kin, HLC Logistics Sdn. Bhd. Managing Director Ooi Wai Tek and his spouse, SK Fresh Holdings Sdn. Bhd. Managing Director Lau Chin Mun and his spouse, Ming Chuan Biotechnology Managing Director Tan Kam Chuan and Executive Director Oh Kong Yin, Bagan Samak Chin Chee Khor Pavilion chief Lim Kim Chi, Village Head Ooi Kian Soon, and Poh Yee Holdings Managing Director Lim Poh Yee.

Representatives from Sin Chew Dailys senior management also attended, including General Manager (Regional) Kwek Fu Kwong, Deputy Editor-in-Chief He Wan Mi, Northern Region Senior Manager Ang Po Kam, and Kedah-Perlis Senior Executive Teoh Lian Chee. Their presence underscored the newspapers commitment to engaging directly with local communities and business leaders.

Looking Ahead to the Centenary

From print media pioneer to digital ecosystem builder, Sin Chew Dailys path to its centenary is more than a story of survival, it is an industry demonstration of how to maintain core values while embracing change. As the organization continues to diversify its revenue streams and deepen its community engagement, it offers a compelling model for legacy media navigating the challenges of the 21st century.

The coming three years will be critical as Sin Chew Daily works toward its 100th anniversary. With a clear strategy that balances tradition and innovation, the newspaper appears well-positioned to remain a vital voice in Malaysias media landscape for decades to come.
