Ahmad Zahid meets Negeri Sembilan assemblymen at UMNO HQ

Negeri Sembilans constitutional crisis continues to ferment. BN Chairman and UMNO President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi held a meeting at UMNO headquarters on Wednesday night (October 1) with 25 state assemblymen from BN and PN in Negeri Sembilan, conveying a clear message: focus on their respective duties and do not be affected by the current situation.

Meeting Highlights

UMNO Negeri Sembilan Liaison Committee Chairman Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias told reporters when leaving the UMNO building at about 8:55 p.m. that the meeting was mainly to convey a direction to all assemblymen, hoping they would focus on their respective duties and not be affected by the current situation.

He emphasized that the meeting did not involve issues between the Menteri Besar and the Yang di-Pertuan Besar Tuanku Muhriz, nor did it discuss a new state executive council lineup. This statement surprised many, as Negeri Sembilan is in the midst of a serious constitutional crisis, and everyone had expected the meeting to focus on how to resolve the current deadlock.

Senior Leaders Attend

Jalaluddin confirmed that the meeting was also attended by UMNO Supreme Council members, including Secretary-General Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, BN Secretary-General Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir, UMNO Vice President and Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail, and UMNO Supreme Council member and Information Chief Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.

Earlier, several Negeri Sembilan BN assemblymen were seen arriving at UMNO headquarters at about 8 p.m., including UMNO Johol assemblyman Datuk Saiful Yazan and MCA Chennah assemblyman Siau Kon Yew. This meeting demonstrated the high level of attention from BN leadership to the Negeri Sembilan situation.

Constitutional Crisis Background

Negeri Sembilans constitutional crisis began in September, when 10 executive council members were dismissed by order, effective September 20. This decision was made with the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Besar Tuanku Muhriz, but the divide between the state government and the palace remains unresolved to this day.

Previously, Ahmad Zahid had held a special meeting with all Negeri Sembilan BN assemblymen on September 27 to seek solutions to the current deadlock. Wednesdays meeting involved PAS and Parti Amanah Negara assemblymen, aiming to coordinate and find the best solution in accordance with the state constitution and traditional customs.

Analysis and Outlook

Although the meeting claimed not to discuss specific political controversies, it implicitly carried deeper political messages. Negeri Sembilan is currently governed by a coalition of BN, PN, and DAP, but recent factional disputes have made the political situation turbulent. Ahmad Zahids meeting was clearly intended to stabilize morale, assuring all assemblymen of the partys support while also extending goodwill to the palace.

However, the general public believes that as long as the core disagreement between the Menteri Besar and Tuanku Muhriz remains unresolved, Negeri Sembilans political situation will be difficult to truly stabilize. Whether there will be greater political changes before the end of the year remains unknown. For local residents, they hope to see the government focus on economic and livelihood issues rather than remaining mired in the quagmire of political struggle.

Negeri Sembilans constitutional crisis is not only a problem for the state but also a microcosm of Malaysian coalition politics. When tensions arise between the central and local governments, and between the palace and the government, how to maintain political stability while adhering to the constitutional framework is a test that all politicians must face.
